On the occasion of the anniversary of April 1st and the completion of 71 years since the beginning of the EOKA liberation struggle, the "Modestos Pantelis" Cultural Foundation is organizing a series of events of remembrance and historical reflection in Cyprus and abroad, honoring the sacrifice of the fighters and keeping alive the historical memory of Cypriot Hellenism.
The launch of the actions will take place on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at the European Parliament in Brussels, with the first screening of the documentary “Cyprus Calls… Five Souls for Freedom”. The event is organized by Democratic Rally MEP Michalis Hadjipantela, where through historical testimonies and documents, important aspects of the EOKA struggle are highlighted.
The program of events continues in Cyprus with a series of actions of honor and remembrance dedicated to EOKA hero Modestos Pantelis.
Specifically, on Monday, March 30, 2026, a blood donation will be held in memory of the hero, while on Tuesday, March 31, a memorial service will be held at his grave, followed by a torchlight procession.
The anniversary events will culminate on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, with the National Memorial of Modestos Pantelis, during which DISY MEP Michalis Hadjipantela will deliver a memorial speech.
At the same time, on Friday, April 3, the first screening in Cyprus of the documentary "Five Souls for Freedom" will take place, while the series of events will conclude on May 9, 2026 with the Conference entitled "70 Years Since the Gallows. Scientific Tribute to the Hanged Heroes of EOKA". Historians and researchers Petros Papapolyviou, Kyriakos Ioannou and Aikaterini Papaioannou will participate in the tribute.
As the Foundation points out, the events are part of a broader effort to highlight the historical memory, self-sacrifice and values of the EOKA struggle, conveying the message of freedom and historical continuity to younger generations.
