Free Famagusta is sinking

By Dimitris Dimitriou (Savoullis) *

This unprecedented situation that humanity is experiencing in recent months has put us in a state of insecurity for our economic survival. Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic should not be marked by the impoverishment of workers, but quite the opposite, ie their support.

The province of the Famagusta Free Zone will experience a difficult winter as in recent years it had almost written off agricultural work since no government actively supported the farmer and therefore engaged in the tourism industry which has resulted in the vast majority of citizens being led to economic and professional misery. Unfortunately, without growth, the recession will deepen, deficits and debt will increase, and households and businesses will enter a painful vicious circle.

The province of Famagusta has potential and wealth, has exceptional human resources that with the right mix of social and economic policy, with a change of mentality, with the consolidation of meritocracy, with bold reforms and structural changes in the agricultural and tourism sector, with investments in new technologies and alternative forms of energy, etc., to reverse the climate and give growth breaths to our economy without pushing the citizens and especially the economically weaker into economic misery and above all there should be no demographic change from the departure of young people.

It is a fact that the State tried to help with specialized allowances and extraordinary financial aid, which, however, were opportunistic, substandard and often used for micropolitical reasons. Now, the intervention of the State must become more substantial and effective.
