It is customary to throw flares as soon as "Christ is Risen" is heard. At that moment, dozens of dogs are possessed by intense fear and cannot handle the situation. The deafening and sudden noise gives them the extremely unpleasant feeling of fear.
"The periods that are combined with sparklers are for many dogs, but also for their guardians, very difficult.
They are the crotophobic dogs. Those who show fear - sometimes even panic - when hearing unexpected, loud noises, such as firecrackers and sparklers", points out the energetic dog trainer, Renata Grypari.
Dogs hear much better than humans and are sensitive to both ultrasound and infrasound.
Usually, he says, crotophobia is a year-round problem. It intensifies, however, because of the flares. It can manifest itself in various forms and at any age of the dog. Also, it is important to know that it initially manifests as fear, which if not treated in time, becomes a phobia.
He points out that dogs hear much better than humans and are sensitive to both ultrasound and infrasound. That is why some people become phobic of noises (especially if they are loud).
What are the reactions of a crotophobic dog?
Upon hearing loud noises, according to Ms. Grypari, a crotophobic dog is in a state of panic.
"He usually has his head down, his eyes wide open, his tail on his legs, he's shaking. His ears are pulled back, he runs for cover, tries to jump on us for protection, or hides in small rooms or under furniture. He is trembling, panting and salivating," describes Ms. Grypari.
He also states that in rare cases he may show aggression. Especially if we try to get him out of hiding.
How can we sympathize with the suffering dog?
According to the expert, there are various methods by which we can control crotophobia in Bengalis. And they are:
We do not leave the dog outside the house
We keep the dog inside the house. We don't have him either on the balcony or in the yard. Because if he's on the balcony there's a chance he'll jump – with the risk of hanging himself if he's on a leash. If we have him in the yard he may try to run away to escape, as a result he will be thrown onto the street and lost.
If the dog wants to hide somewhere, we let him
Also, under no circumstances do I take the dog with me to an area where flares will be thrown.
Lights on
We close the shutters, so that he is not frightened by the flashes, and leave the light on.
Music – Television
We play music or turn up the TV and close the windows to reduce the noise from the clicks.
What do we do if the dog finds a place to hide?
If the dog wants to hide somewhere, we let him. We're not trying to get him out of hiding. With this act of ours, we increase his stress. Usually, crotophobic dogs choose to hide in small spaces, such as the bathroom, or under the bed.
How we react when we are with him
While the skies are flooded with sparklers, we don't react at all. Voices of fear or excitement make the phobic dog more nervous. We can tell him, here and there, reassuring words, but without excessive behavior.
