We celebrate her "Mother's Day" or as we are used to saying it «mother's Day». It is a modern celebration which is of course dedicated to all mothers, motherhood, maternal ties and the influence of mothers in society. In Cyprus and many other countries, the second is celebrated Sunday: of the month May.

The first references to Mother's Day and motherhood come from ancient Greece…




Mother Earth (Gaia) wife of Heaven is the personification of nature, who gives birth to the whole world and is worshiped as the supreme deity. The cult then passes on to her daughter, Rhea, Saturn's wife and sister. Rhea is worshiped as the "Mother of the Gods", as she seems to be the first to give birth and raise her children with breast milk. The ancient Greeks paid homage to Rhea every spring, as she was also the goddess of the earth and fertility.

In the Roman Empire, we meet the Feast of the Mother as a feast dedicated to the Goddess Kyveli, which took place every March.

In England of the 15th-16th c. AD, the “was celebratedMothering SundayThat is, "Mother's Sunday", the 4th Sunday of Lent, and was dedicated to mothers. That day everyone Servants took a day off from their masters to visit their homes and spend their day with their mothers.


In the early 20th century in America, the teacher  Anna Jarvis (Anna Jarvis) from Philadelphia, fought for the introduction of Mother's Day, on the 2nd Sunday of May. She wanted to honor her mother who fought for the reconciliation of South and North Americans after the end of the American Civil War in 1864. Anna Jarvis's struggles were justified in 1914, when Congress designated the official national Mother's Day.

In Greece, Mother's Day was celebrated for the first time on February 2, 1929, to combine this Feast with the Christian feast of Ypapantis. But during the 1960s, the holiday shifted from February 2nd to the 2nd Sunday in May.

The principal invited all the mothers and their children to school  offered from a carnation as well as from a card they painted. They wrote inside: "Mom I love you and thank you for everything you offer me." Also, with the help of their teachers, they sang the song: "I love you because you are nice».
