A few days before he passed away, he described to his father those ugly images.

Everyone who knew him…

They speak for him in the best words. He was a benevolent and meek character. He had a unique glow on his face that caught your attention and pulled you close to him like a magnet. Maybe because the beauty of his soul was so intense that he could not help but externalize. He had smiling eyes and was always clear, crystal clear. They won you over at first sight.

My son, this is what the cursed war has. I wish we never lived them

He loved everyone and his love was sincere and selfless. He had no enemies and those who envied him had nothing wrong with him.

Symeon Glykainou was among those who did not bow to the difficulties of the war and with the courage of Lokatzis, he fought in 1974 for his homeland. He found himself in front of one of the most horrific crimes. A few days before he passed away, he described to his father those frightening images.

Maria Glykainou, the hero's sister, reports to ant1iwo:
"My brother was born on 22/9/1951 in Paralimni. He was a wonderful man. He always smiled and had many friends, from Paralimni to Paphos. He was honest and hardworking. He worked in Famagusta and in 1970, shortly before turning 18, he went as a soldier. He was fired in 1972 and left again in 1974. He fought for his homeland like a real lad. Before he left life, he described to my father what he saw and dissolved his soul…

I will never forget that night he left our house…

He said goodbye to us all but it was as if he was telling us: "I am going to fight for my homeland but I will not go back again". I felt like I could not leave him but it could not be done otherwise…

On August 6, 1974, my father, without telling us anything, went to visit him at the "ILIA PAPAKYRIAKOU" camp in Athalassa. She hugged him full of emotion but when she saw that he was injured, she was shocked. He told him that he had to return home but he replied: "Papa, as long as the homeland needs me I will do my duty".

My brother was brave but he ate his soul what he described to our father with so much sadness: “Papa I saw a Turk trying to rape a girl and because the girl was struggling to escape and she was shouting, he cut off her head. I saw her body spartan and her blood, although dead, was still alive and flowing. Her head was further away. I could not stand the spectacle…

"She was martyred and I did not manage to save her, Pope."

My father said with tears in his eyes: "My son, these are the cursed war. I wish we never lived them ".

These words, my father used to say them to us over and over again…

Some days later…

My brother would come with permission to see us. In fact, our mother had prepared clean clothes for him in a suitcase. Unfortunately, as he was coming by car, he had a car accident and instead of going home he went to the hospital. But he was well and went back to the army. On August 12, he was in Agios Hilarion and was fighting. On the 14th of August they were in the area of Pachyammos, Kyrenia and in the evening of the same day, they spent the night in Agios Ambrosios. The next morning (15/8/1974) they moved to Halevka. No one has seen him since…
He was always with his close friend Lambros Vardakis, who unfortunately had not been seen either. We asked everywhere but no one saw my brother. We moved earth and sky but unfortunately…
"The Sergeant of Symeon Glykainos, of 33 M.K. (32M.K.), Α.Σ.Μ. 6067/69 has been ignored since 15 August 1974… ". The letter was written…
My mother has not left our house since August 15, 1974. She always had the suitcase with the clean clothes she had prepared for him by her side and was waiting for him. He took them out every few days, washed them, ironed them and put them back. He lived with the hope that she would see him alive again and cross the threshold of our house again. She would welcome him with joys and songs.
My mother waited for him for 30 whole years, she couldn't take it anymore γε She passed away and a year later, my father also went to meet her. Shortly before he died he told us: "I am going to find my son and my wife".
I was in a lot of pain but I did not stop looking for him until I received a phone call…
I was told: "The remains of your brother were found in 2010 in a mass grave in the area of the Turkish Cypriot village of Tziaos…". We got them in January 2017 and he was buried in February. No clothes were found except his socks. They shot him in the head and he had no limbs, they probably tied him up. He was in the same grave with his close friend Lambros Vardakis.
I miss my brother very much and I will always miss him!
May God rest his soul but also the souls of all those young men who fought in 1974, to keep their memory Eternal. Immortals! "
