Facebook Censorship: 'Sorry' for blocking Delacroix's painting due to nudity

Another incredible mistake for the social network: The algorithm censored the historical table in which a topless woman who is none other than Marian, the symbol of the French Republic, "stars"

Facebook has admitted that it made a mistake by temporarily banning an advertisement that used the famous romantic painting "Freedom Leads the People" by Eugene Delacroix, inspired by the French Revolution of 1830. The ban was made because the painting depicts a topless woman holds a French flag.

The painting, which does not depict a random woman, but Marianne, the national symbol of the French Republic, which is also imprinted on a French banknote, was used in an online advertising campaign for a play to be staged in Paris.

But last week, Facebook censorship "cut" the ad and the billboard, according to project director Zosli Fiorina. As he said, according to the French Agency, "just a quarter of an hour after the start of the ad, it was blocked and the company (s.s. Facebook) told us that it can not look naked."

He then posted a new ad with the same board, but where "Eleftheria"'s breasts were covered with a banner that read "Facebook censored". This ad was not banned.

On Sunday, Facebook apologized for its zeal. According to the CEO of the American social network in Paris, Elodi Larsis, "the project 'Freedom leads the people' has its place on Facebook. We immediately informed the user that his use of the painting is therefore approved."

"In order to protect the integrity of our service, we verify millions of images that are published each week and sometimes make mistakes," Larsis said.

On Thursday, a court in the French capital rejected the accusations of a French teacher, who was seeking compensation, because, according to his lawsuit, Facebook had censored his page when he posted a nude painting by Gustave Courbet. The court, however, pointed out that Facebook made a mistake by not explaining to the user the reasons for its decision.

The bones of Delacroix, Courbet and many others will creak in their grave…
