The European Commission found that the TikTok platform does not provide the necessary information about the content of advertisements.
It also does not provide information about the users the ads are targeting and who paid for the ads.
What the EU says about TikTok ads
Specifically, the European Commission today informed TikTok platform managers of its preliminary view that the company does not comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) obligation to publish an advertising repository.
Furthermore, according to the Commission, “TikTok’s ad repository does not allow the public to comprehensively search for ads based on this information, thus limiting the usefulness of the tool.”
The Commission's report is based on research involving the analysis of internal company documents, testing of TikTok's tools and interviews with experts in the sector. The Commission informs TikTok of its preliminary report that it is in breach of the Digital Services Act and the company now has the opportunity to exercise its rights of defence by examining the documents contained in the Commission's investigation file.
