The global fleet of electric vehicles is going to exceed 20 million

Plug-in vehicles are set to reach 20 million in June, according to estimates by BloombergNEF (BNEF), a number that marks a significant increase from the 1 million electric cars in 2016.

According to a Bloomberg report, in the second half of 2022, nearly one million electric vehicles a month are expected to be added to the global electric vehicle fleet, a much faster growth than a few years ago estimated by the automotive and oil industries.

More specifically, in 2016, BP estimated that it could acquire 71 million plug-in vehicles by 2035, an amount that, according to new data, is expected to be achieved ten years earlier, by 2025.

It is also observed that, in some areas, the market for such vehicles is at a better level than in others. More specifically, China accounts for 46% of total sales, followed by Europe with 34%. The third place is occupied by North America, with 15%, while all other countries, in total, represent only 5% of the global fleet of electric vehicles.

Plug-in hybrids in the European market

Most plug-in vehicles are electric. However, there are an estimated 5,3 million plug-in hybrid vehicles located mainly in Europe.

These vehicles are also believed to have helped the car industry achieve Europe's increasingly stringent targets, which are to reduce vehicle carbon emissions.

However, according to BNEF estimates, in the coming years, the market is expected to move away from plug-in hybrid vehicles, as governments reduce their subsidies for them and the car industry has begun to turn to all-electric models.
