Despina Vandi's decision to cancel her appearance in Izmir, after posting a poster of Kemal Atatürk at the venue, caused a frenzy among Turkish Instagram users.
Turkish commentators flooded the Greek singer's account with insults, derogatory comments, nationalist crowns, Turkish flags and images of Kemal Ataturk. Several, on the occasion of the fact that the concert was scheduled to take place in Izmir, wrote to Despina Vandi "to return swimming", thus reproducing the Turkish nationalist rhetoric regarding the destruction of Izmir in 1922.
Despina Vandi in her post on Instagram said about the incident that TEV (Turkish Education Foundation) is entirely responsible as it "unilaterally decided to change the character of the event as a concert and gave it a political character while we had not agreed to such a thing" .
"Therefore my participation in the concert was not possible" added Despina Vandi who in her post expresses her respect to those who honored her with their presence in Smyrna.
After the announcement of this decision, thousands of Turks have flocked to the singer's posts on social media, commenting, among other things, that she should not cross their country's borders again and that she should show respect to Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey.
