So he appeared last week during an ad for his new skincare line wearing bright red socks with brown and sandals, a style that has established itself in everyone's consciousness as that of mature German tourists.

But Beckham was not a pioneer. Socks and sandals may have been heavily criticized in recent years, but like hiking boots, they have become an unexpected trend for both men and women. Just ask rapper Tyler, The Creator - who posts photos of his socks and sandals on Instagram - and Kane West, who chose this particular combination at a recent wedding.

Adam Welts, director of the Net-a-Porter website for men's clothing, Mr. Porter told the British Guardian that the trend was proof that "nothing remains" bad taste "forever."

Originally, this was a style associated with tourists. But now it has been adopted by brands like Prada, which have shown that you can do it simply for aesthetic reasons - a sporty sandal and patterned sock is quite fashionable and fun.
