The situation in public hospitals is currently manageable, the spokesperson for the State Health Services Organization (SHSO), Charalambos Charilaou, told CNA on Tuesday, assuring that the Organization continues to make many efforts to adequately address the seasonal epidemic outbreak of various viruses.
Asked to refer to the current picture presented by public hospitals - especially the Emergency and Accident Departments (EADs) - Mr. Charilaou said that a recession is observed, however, he noted that this does not make them complacent.
According to Charalambos Charilaou, "we are not at the peak of cases and we expect that we will continue to see a large number of cases in the ICUs in the coming days, while there will continue to be a need for an increased number of beds."
As he added, the Hellenic National Health Service is making many efforts to adequately address this seasonal epidemic outbreak of various viruses, so that no patient is left without proper medical care.
He explained that the coexistence of four main viruses, such as Influenza, RSV, Covid 19 and postpneumonia, "increase the number of people visiting the emergency rooms and the need for hospital beds also increases."
However, he noted that "the situation is manageable and there is no reason for concern", while he called on citizens who have mild symptoms, instead of going to the TAEP and delaying being examined and complaining about being late, to contact their Personal Doctors and during weekends and holidays to contact the on-call clinics, in order to receive the appropriate service.
When asked whether meetings will be held to take further measures, since the situation has not yet reached its peak, Mr. Charilaou stated that the measures that have been taken by both the Ministry of Health and the other providers, "we believe that at this time they are sufficient to address the seasonal epidemic crisis."
"If it becomes necessary to take any other measures, we will do so," he stressed.
In relation to the cases that come to the emergency room, he stated that the TAEP "accept a large number of patients", while adding that "the number has multiplied before the seasonal epidemic outbreak".
Responding to a relevant question, Mr. Charilaou said that approximately 200 cases are received at the Nicosia General Hospital, while approximately 170 cases are received at the Larnaca, Limassol and Famagusta General Hospitals per 24 hours.
Moreover, according to the OKYpY Press Spokesperson, five people with influenza A are still hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit.
Finally, it appeals to the public to adhere to all health measures that were previously in force, such as regular hand washing with soap and water or with an alcohol-based solution and limiting contact as much as possible with people who are already sick and have symptoms, especially if they belong to vulnerable groups.
