The decision of the Health Insurance Organization (OHI) to replace radiologists with "other doctors" in the performance of radiological examinations from January 2025 is condemned by the Radiological Society of Cyprus (AEK) in a statement calling on the President and the members of the Board of Directors of the OAH to review the decision issue at the January 9 meeting.
It is noted, among other things, that AEK proposes to give a window of time before January 2026, such as 6 months, to the radiology centers, for the recruitment of radiologists stating that "it is clear that the centers that will not comply, will never do so, as they have already stated."
It is added that the OAU should immediately terminate the contract with any centers that do not comply, as it should have done a long time ago, since, as stated "the wording of the contract, addresses a 'physician with a specialty in radiology' as provided by the legislation of the National Health Service for specialists doctors".
It is noted that the decision in question, which was ratified by the OAU Board of Directors on December 19, was based on misleading proposals that were presented or transferred incorrectly, even with reference to the name of AEK.
It is also reported that "the justification of the lack of radiologists is disproved, since there are 184 registered radiologists, sufficient for the needs".
At the same time, the announcement reminds that the physical presence of a radiologist is absolutely necessary when performing examinations on Axial and Magnetic Tomographs, while on the contrary the presence of "other doctors" is unnecessary.
"AEK calls for the immediate revocation of this decision and is committed to protecting citizens by ensuring quality by implementing European directives," the announcement concludes.
