The upgrading of oncological care is an urgent need, states the Cyprus Patients' Associations Federation (CPA), in a statement issued on the occasion of World Cancer Day, which is commemorated on February 4.
World Cancer Day "conveys the message ''United by Unique'', emphasizing the importance of a personalized and coordinated approach to patient care," notes OSAK, emphasizing that "cancer is not only a medical issue, but also a social challenge that requires a modern, accessible and effective health system."
"In Cyprus, cancer remains one of the greatest threats to public health, with approximately 4.000 new cases and 1.560 deaths annually. Despite scientific developments, challenges persist, mainly in equal access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment services," it is noted. "Upgrading oncology care is an imperative, with targeted policies that will ensure quality health services for all patients," it added.
At the same time, OSAK underlines the need for comprehensive policies and actions that will ensure early diagnosis, effective treatment and continuous support for patients.
"The collaboration of the state, health professionals and society is essential to create an environment where patients receive the care they deserve. The development of coordinated and enhanced services is crucial for the effective management of the disease," it is emphasized.
It is emphasized that "the creation of the National Cancer Institute, which has been launched, is a decisive step for the upgrading of cancer care in the country". It is noted that "the Institute will function as the body of expertise and support for oncology/haematology services, promoting the quality of care in neoplastic diseases and access to innovative treatments". "Its implementation will contribute to improving the coordination of services and to the implementation of the national strategy for the treatment of cancer in our country", it is added.
“February 4 is not only a day of awareness, but a reminder of our responsibility to act. With collaboration, commitment and innovation, we can ensure that every patient has access to the best possible care. Cancer doesn’t wait – and neither do we. It’s time for decisive action!”, the announcement concludes.
