A few days after Britain gave the green light to Merck's pill to treat it Covid-19, Pfizer has announced encouraging results for a second treatment.

Pfizer pill is "Highly effective" in preventing serious illness among high-risk individuals who started medication immediately after developing symptoms.

Clinical trial has shown that the pill, which is planned to be released in the US under the brand name Paxlovid, reduces by 89% the risk of hospitalization and death if given three days after the onset of symptoms.

The results were so encouraging that the independent panel monitoring the trial decided to terminate it early. This will allow treatment to be given to the study volunteers who received placebo.

"The results have surpassed even our wildest dreams," according to the New York Times, said Alyssa Anderson, a Pfizer executive who undertook the development of the drug.
