Η Covid-19 is still causing about 1.700 deaths a week worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced Thursday, calling on those who belong to vulnerable groups of the population to be vaccinated against the disease.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus sounded the alarm over the observed decline in vaccination coverage of the population. Despite the high death toll, "data show that vaccination coverage has declined among health workers and citizens over 60, two of the most at-risk groups," Tedros told a news conference in Geneva.
"The World Health Organization recommends that those in high-risk groups be vaccinated against it Covid-19 within 12 months of their last dose," he recalled.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Covid-19 it has caused more than seven million deaths worldwide, according to official WHO figures.
