Η Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today, saying that Covid is now under adequate control. This is an important step towards ending the pandemic that has killed more than 6,9 million people.

"With great hope I declare that the Covid-19 no longer constitutes an international health emergency, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, estimating that the pandemic has led to "at least 20 million" deaths, nearly three times the Organization's official tally.

The WHO emergency committee which on January 30, 2020 had declared the Organization's highest level of alert for the Covid-19 raise this alert level today.

The lifting of the measure is a sign of the progress the world has made in fighting the virus, but the WHO has said the Covid-19 it is here to stay, even if it is no longer an emergency.
