"Whether we will reach the need for universal mask use in the general population depends on the course of the disease as well as the number of asymptomatic patients, the number of whom will be attempted to be apparent from the study to be done on 20,000 people, with based on the decision of the Council of Ministers ", said the Scientific Director, Nicosia Directorate of OKYPY, Dr. Marios Loizou, regarding the use of a mask.

Allow me to repeat what is happening right now. The WHO reiterated its position against the mass use of masks by the general population, this time pointing out the dangers of misuse of the mask. "

"These risks include the possibility of becoming infected unintentionally by touching and reusing the mask, developing difficulty breathing, and a false sense of security that can lead to neglect of more important measures, such as "Finally, he reiterates that the masks should be used by patients, their caregivers and healthcare workers," he added.

At the same time, he said, "At the same time, the European Center for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), despite agreeing with the WHO position, does not rule out the possibility of a more extensive mask use under certain circumstances. The position of the ECDC is that, depending on the epidemiological data, and in special synergistic conditions, such as in our country the supermarkets, the banks, there can be benefits mainly for the avoidance of dispersal from asymptomatic patients. This need is directly related to the course of the disease in each state. At the same time, the ECDC points out the dangers of improper mask use and especially of the false sense of security that can make us forget the basic rules that protect us in this pandemic. The hygiene of the hands, the observance of the distances and the avoidance of touching the face ".

As a catalyst for what will apply in Cyprus, Dr. Loizou stated that "whether we will reach the need for universal use of the mask in the general population depends on the course of the disease and the number of asymptomatic patients, the number of whom will be effort to be transparent from the study to be done on 20,000 people, based on the decision of the Council of Ministers. It is up to us to continue to behave properly. We stay home, we keep our distance ".
