Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Cyprus and on average over the last five years, approximately 4.000 new cases and 1.560 deaths have been recorded annually, according to the latest available data, the Oncology Nursing Sector of the Pancyprian Association of Nurses and Midwives states in a statement, on the occasion of today's World Cancer Day.
The Department, which is actively participating in the promotion of events that this year have as their theme "United by Uniqueness" and is part of a three-year campaign (2025-2027), which focuses on the personal journeys of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, states that cancer is not just a medical diagnosis but is a deeply personal issue.
As reported, prostate cancer is the most common oncological disease in the male population, with approximately 540 new cases per year during the period 2016-2020. In 2019 and 2020, cases increased to 550 and 656 respectively.
Regarding breast cancer, approximately 700 new cases are identified and recorded annually in women and seven new cases in men.
These data highlight the need for continued awareness, prevention and early diagnosis, as well as for strengthening patient care and support services, it is noted.
According to the announcement, the initiative aims to enhance empathy, understanding and inclusion in cancer care, while supporting more personalized treatment approaches.
Oncology Nurses are an integral part of the care of people with cancer, playing multiple roles that contribute decisively to the course of treatment and the improvement of patients' quality of life, it is noted.
Specifically, the role of the Oncology Nurse includes education and counseling, symptom management, psychological and emotional support, coordination of the Care Team, and strengthening Prevention and Early Diagnosis, it is reported.
