In yesterday's announcement, the MP of DIKO Larnaca, Christos Orfanidis, after the ongoing reactions expressed for the relocation of the Land Registry and the Famagusta Town Planning from Larnaca to Paralimni, returned with a new announcement for the province of Famagusta, this time for the Crocodile Park in Dasaki Achnas.

This is the announcement of the DIKO Larnaca MP, Christos Orfanidis:

Crocodile Park: Growth or Disaster?

The approval of the issue to proceed with the creation of a crocodile park was recently given by the Community Council of Achna, in an attempt to desperately upgrade the area.

It should be noted that in the past another Community and Municipality rejected the creation of a crocodile park in their areas for many reasons which are related to risks that will arise in such a case.

Starting from the fact that the park will be built in an area that is quite close to settlements, there is a reasonable concern about the possible tragic result in case the crocodiles escape from the park, since the safety of the residents located in nearby areas will be threatened. immediately.

Going forward, the amounts of water needed to operate such a park are massive. Unfortunately, in Cyprus we have a serious problem with water supply, so it will be difficult to find the quantities needed for the smooth operation of the park.

The issue of the health of both the people who live and the animals that are raised within a short radius of this park is also important. The reason is that such animals are not intended for the climate and environment of Cyprus, so they are likely to develop diseases that may be contagious. At the same time, research and evidence show that some crocodiles carry mosquitoes, the stings of which can be fatal to human life. Animals in neighboring livestock areas may have health problems or even die.

Both the state health and veterinary services do not have the appropriate knowledge, experience and know-how to be able to monitor and deal with any form of bacteria that may reproduce.

The company that will undertake this project, has already developed a crocodile park in Israel, which, however, did not have the desired result and shortly after, the company declared bankruptcy. It is noteworthy that after the park in Israel closed, the company relinquished its responsibilities to animals and society and abandoned the crocodiles, uncontrollable among themselves.

In conclusion, the data show that the development of such a park can offer anything other than development in the area. The consequences will be negative for the region. The chances of affecting the health of humans and animals are many and real in the scenario of tragic events occurring if the crocodiles escape.

Announcement of the Ecologists 'Movement-Citizens' Cooperation

The decision of the Community Council of Achna, based on which the way is opened for the creation of a crocodile park finds us clearly opposed. As we have explained in a recent meeting of the President of the Movement of Ecologists - Citizens' Cooperation, Mr. George Perdikis with the Commonwealth Achnas, the creation of such a business carries serious risks. After all, the example of similar parks in neighboring countries, such as Israel, show in many ways that wildlife is not an easy exhibit to manage and profit.

At the same time, we express the hope that in the forthcoming global community gathering there will be a substantial dialogue, after the objective information of the residents. No decision should be made without considering the real consequences of such a project on the environment and human health.

It is reminded, of course, that as things stand today, the import of crocodiles and the creation of a crocodile park are prohibited in Cyprus. Of course, in the past there was a ban on the creation of a park for seals and dolphins, but it was canceled by the government to facilitate a specific operation.
