Environmental Movement: The findings of the analyzes for the Achnas Dam are worrying

The analyzes carried out by the Environmental Movement show significant pollution of the waters of the Achnas dam.

In a statement, the Environmentalists' Movement states that "a whole month has passed since the leakage of sewage from an adjacent livestock unit into the Achnas fence, however there is no official information regarding the investigation".

This announcement:

However, there is no official information regarding the authorities' investigation into this very serious incident of pollution of a uniquely important wetland included in the Natura 2000 network of European habitats.

Were the huge sewage tanks licensed and legal? Why had no preventive measures been taken to protect the dam against possible leakage? Why are livestock units allowed to operate on the shore of the dam lake? What will be the consequences for the company that is rumored to own the sewage tanks? Does the fact that it is one of the largest cattle breeding and dairying units in Cyprus create cover-up conditions?

Until now we do not have any official information from the competent authorities or findings based on laboratory results about the unsuitability of the water for irrigating adjacent crops.

The issue is troubling, particularly in light of our own laboratory tests that raise reasonable concerns. Our own analyzes reveal significant pollution of the dam's waters. What do the analyzes of the Department of Water and the Department of the Environment say?

We demand the notification of the results of the analyzes by government laboratories as well as the full investigation of the responsibilities of the leak and the taking of all the measures specified by the law.
