On Friday, October 14, 2022, the 2nd Pan-Cypriot Refugee Meeting was held at Dasous Achnas Square in the presence of the Minister of Transport, who stated that the highest priority remains for our side, to make our homeland a truly sovereign and independent state.

According to an official announcement, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Yiannis Karousos, representing the President of the Republic of Cyprus, stated that "the goal and highest priority remains for our side, to make our homeland a truly sovereign and independent state. A state that will free our country from anachronistic guarantee systems, occupation armies and dependencies on third countries".

Mr. Karousos mentioned that there are countless times that the President of the Republic has made it clear to the international community that under no circumstances should any solution deviate from the Summit Agreements, the United Nations resolutions on Cyprus, the principles of the international legality, the European acquis, but also the convergences achieved so far.

In addition, the Minister condemned the actions of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot sides, which persist in the same intransigence they have always shown, making excessive claims and taking a series of provocative actions, which do nothing but promote the creation of the necessary climate for the start of negotiations.

At the same time, Mr. Karousos made reference to the events that took place in 1974 in Achna, where more than 70 thousand people set up the largest camp in Cyprus, under the pine trees of the forest. With people persecuted seeking shelter to be saved, with shocking scenes of human pain and misery, with small children sleeping in the dirt, mothers crying over killed or missing children and husbands. The forest of Achna had turned into a refuge for thousands of refugees, from the villages of Mesaoria, Famagusta and Kyrenia.

Finally, Mr. Karousos congratulated the President and the members of the Achnas Community Council, and those who worked for the implementation and completion of this important initiative.
