A total of 29,5 kilograms of rolling tobacco was seized by the Customs Department from a British tourist who admitted to buying it from the occupied territories with the intention of transporting it to his country.

According to a statement from the Customs Department "on Tuesday, May 2, after a relevant check carried out by officials of the Department at the Deryneia crossing point, they found in the hand luggage of a British tourist, who was returning on foot from the uncontrolled, to the controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus, 29,5, XNUMX kg of tobacco for a rolling cigarette. The tourist admitted that he bought the tobacco from the areas where the government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control and transported them illegally to the free areas with the intention of transporting them to the United Kingdom."

It is added that the tourist was "arrested for obvious customs offenses and taken to Ayia Napa detention centers, while the tobacco products were confiscated as subject to confiscation".

On Wednesday, May 3, "the British tourist's request for an out-of-court settlement of the offenses was accepted, with the payment of the sum of 10 thousand euros and the abandonment of the confiscated tobacco products, and he was then released."
