An agreement for the installation of photovoltaic systems in the parking lots of the Limassol General Hospital and the Famagusta General Hospital was signed on Friday by the EAC and the State Health Services Organization (SHSO), in the presence of the Ministers of Energy, Commerce and Industry, and Health.
In a statement, the EAC states that "according to preliminary estimates, a photovoltaic system with a capacity of approximately 2,7 MW can be developed at the Limassol General Hospital and 0,8 MW at the Famagusta General Hospital". The photovoltaic systems will be installed in the parking lots of the hospitals and therefore the project also includes the construction of metal canopies, on which the photovoltaic panels will be placed, simultaneously providing shading and energy utilization of the spaces. The two projects are expected to be completed within 2027.
Within the framework of the agreement, the EAC states that it will provide specialized services related to the initial and final design of the projects, support during the licensing process by the competent authorities, the preparation and technical evaluation of the tender documents, as well as supervision during the construction phase of the projects.
"The new agreement leverages the experience from the successful cooperation between EAC and OKYpY, within the framework of which a 1,3 MW photovoltaic system was installed at the Nicosia General Hospital, which was put into operation in October 2024, achieving significant energy and environmental benefits," it added.
In his statement, the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianos, underlined the importance of utilizing the parking lots of public hospitals for the installation of photovoltaic systems on roofs, with the aim of producing green energy. As he stated, “the energy produced will cover a significant part of the hospitals’ electricity needs, contributing to the reduction of energy costs and their environmental footprint”. At the same time, he noted that “the implementation of the project will improve the daily lives of staff and citizens visiting public hospitals and will strengthen the exemplary role that public bodies are called to play in the green transition”.
According to the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, "the installation of Photovoltaic Systems in the Limassol and Famagusta Hospitals is an essential step for the energy upgrade of public hospitals. We are strengthening the sustainability of the health system, reducing energy costs and contributing actively to the protection of the environment."
