AKEL Famagusta held a protest event at noon on Monday 14/04 regarding the understaffing facing the Famagusta General Hospital.
In his statements, AKEL's parliamentary spokesman, Giorgos Loukaidis, said that "the truth is that in the last year we have only had 12 resignations of doctors and the answer from OKYPY cannot be that the reasons for their resignation are personal. The reasons for resignation are not simply personal and this is evidenced by the fact that we have an increased percentage of resignations compared to other hospitals in our country. They have also spoken to us and explained to us that the main reason that leads them to resign concerns precisely the understaffing, but also the broader work environment and the lack of understanding they find in the problems they face."
He added that "this situation is unacceptable and must be ended. First aid is significantly understaffed in a province that must meet the needs of the local population, but also, for a period of nine months, meet the needs arising from tourists. The situation with nephrologists is also unacceptable. It is not possible that dialysis patients have no choice on Sunday. Safety issues are being created, issues that can cost human lives, in contrast to what is happening in other hospitals."
AKEL calls on the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, to schedule a meeting to resolve the problems.
