AKEL filed a complaint about a Nazi salute at a school in the free province of Famagusta.
According to the complaint, students, with the consent of a teacher, were photographed giving a Nazi salute. The school teacher encouraged the students to continue taking the photo while giving the Nazi salute, despite the reaction of her colleague to the incident.
In a statement, the AKEL Famagusta District Committee unequivocally condemns the serious and worrying incident. It states that the reproduction of Nazi symbols, even "for fun", constitutes a dangerous deviation that offends collective memory and undermines the democratic values of Education. Nazism has no place in our schools, nor in our society.
AKEL calls on the Minister of Education to immediately take all necessary measures, both to investigate the incident and to effectively shield public schools against extreme, fascist ideas.
The announcement also states that Democracy cannot leave room for tolerance towards fascism.
