Two people, aged 40 and 31, who live in the free province of Famagusta, were arrested yesterday by the Police in connection with the case of violence in sports venues, clashes and assault, rioting, assault on a police officer during the lawful performance of his duties, assault with causing grievous bodily harm, threats and insults, offenses committed last Wednesday night in Larnaca.
According to the Police, after the end of the football match between the teams Alki Oroklini - Onisilos Sotiras, which took place on the afternoon of October 14, at the Famagusta Stadium, tension arose between the technical staffs and the players of the two teams.
At the same time, a group of about 6 unknown people who were in the stadium, attacked and hit a person, with the result that a member of the Police, who was off duty in the stadium, rushed to help.
The member of the Police revealed his identity and tried to stop the incident, as a result of which he was attacked by a 33-year-old man, who hit him on the head, threatened him and insulted him.
The policeman was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where the doctors on duty found that he had suffered a skull fracture and was detained for precautionary reasons.
The 33-year-old was arrested and last Thursday he was brought before the Larnaca District Court, which had issued a detention order against him for two days.
At the end of his detention, the 33-year-old was released while the case was registered before the Larnaca District Court.
The case is being investigated by the Larnaca Police Department.
