On Saturday, August 1, 2026, shortly before the anti-occupation event of the Municipality of Famagusta, the First Phase of the twinning of the Municipality of Famagusta with the Municipality of Ljubovia, Serbia, took place at the Cultural Center of the Municipality in Deryneia.
By signing the Twinning Protocol, the two Municipalities confirmed the bonds of friendship and solidarity that connect Cyprus and Serbia and their will for cooperation in the fields of culture, education and sports. The Protocol was signed by the Mayor of Famagusta, Dr. Simos Ioannou, and the Mayor of Ljubovia, Mr. Milan Jovanovic.
An open, extroverted and multicultural city, the sea and the great ports of Famagusta have always opened cosmopolitan horizons to our city. We continue the international tradition of Famagusta even in exile, awaiting the time of return.
In addition to the delegations of the Municipalities of Lyoubovia and Famagusta, the ceremony was attended by:
Ms. Ivanka Stamenkovic, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Serbia; Sir Roger Gale, Member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom and Honorary Citizen of Famagusta; a delegation of the Hellenic Parliament, led by Mr. Georgios Georgantas, Second Vice-President of the Parliament; Mr. Costas Peletidis, Mayor of Patras; Mr. Fontas Alamanos, President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontian Islands; Mr. Apostolos Moumtsakis, Deputy Mayor for Culture of Kavala; Mr. Vasilios Tataropoulos, Secretary General of the Municipality of Piraeus; and Mr. Christos Karaolis, President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom.
