Antonis Papadopoulos - The leader of Varos

"Initiated at EOKA January 1955 under Grigoris Afxentiou. I immediately made sure to find suitable people to form teams. "When the match started, I was in charge of the youth and the strike teams."

Within 30 short words, the legendary "Agras" of EOKA, Antonis Papadopoulos, limited the huge work he performed pre-revolutionary. The modesty that distinguished the great fighter, did not allow him to use some pages, as many did, in the "Chronicle" of the Struggle of Leader Digenis. If he did, he would have to report, and not unjustly, many times to himself.

Pre-revolutionary, in the months of February and March, in addition to the great work he did among the youth of the city and as a recruiter in live material, he made great efforts to find explosives used by fishermen on the east coast of Cyprus, from Paralimni to K of Gialos in our occupied Karpasia. Thanks to Antonis Papadopoulos, EOKA managed to obtain enough material, which was so useful for the start of the Race. The fishermen helped him with great willingness. After all, who could deny a favor to the great athlete, the winged hunter of ANORTHOSIS who was then the idol of a city and province? His enormous offer remained unknown to the Cypriot people, because the pure fighter never spoke for himself.

On December 23, 1955, he and Pavlos Pavlakis were arrested together at the historic Anorthosis building on Ermou Street. On September 08, 1956, the two leaders of EOKA escaped from the Kokkinotrimithia detention center and took refuge in the mountains as guerrillas. There they met the deputy leader of EOKA, Grigoris Afxentiou, where they fought endless battles.

Leventis of Famagusta passed away on August 2, 1981. As a sign of honor for his contribution and devotion, the Association decided to give its new stadium its name. The stadium was completed in 1986 and is called, "Antonis Papadopoulos" stadium
