A delegation from the Municipality of Famagusta is in Brussels for a series of meetings with the European Institutions, as part of efforts to highlight the issue of Famagusta at a European level. The visit was planned following an invitation for a hearing by the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions, which took place on 25 February 2025.

The delegation, led by the Mayor of Famagusta, had the special honor of meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Ms. Roberta Metsola, on February 24. The President was handed the key to the city as a symbol of hope, trust and the continuous effort to vindicate Famagusta.

The handover of the key has a special symbolism, as it honors the institution that represents the voice of European citizens and underlines Europe's responsibility towards the just request for return of the residents of Famagusta. The key was handed over as a message of trust that the European voice can keep the path of return open and strengthen the efforts for justice.

The delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta consisted of the Mayor Dr. Simos Ioannou, the Municipal Councilors Messrs. Emilia Christoforidou Mastri, Michalis Vasiliou, Markos Trangolas and the Municipal Secretary Ms. Marilena Manoli.
In a statement, the Mayor of Famagusta stressed: "Our presence in Brussels is a continuation of the ongoing struggle for the vindication of our city. We are bringing the voice of our refugees to European decision-making centers and we are asking for practical support, so that the path of return to our ancestral homes can be opened."
At the end of the mission, an extensive report will follow on the delegation's meetings and its presentation to the Committee on Petitions.
