A meeting of a delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta was held on March 18, 2022, consisting of the Mayor of Famagusta Mr. Simos Ioannou, the Municipal Councilors Mr. Kostaki Hatzikakou, Chrysanthos Zannettou, Nikos Karoullas and the Municipal Secretary Mrs. Marilena Manolis with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus and head of UNFICYP Mr. Collin Stewart.

After delivering a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Gunderes, the delegation had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Stewart the developments regarding Famagusta and in particular the opening of the enclosed city as well as the expected role of the United Nations. .

Mr Stewart reiterated the United Nations' commitment to the Famagusta resolutions and informed the Municipal delegation that his office was closely monitoring developments. He stressed that the goal of the United Nations is the return of Famagusta, which is sealed by the binding resolutions of the Security Council, but also the resumption of talks to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

The return and opening of Famagusta is beneficial for all of Cyprus and all Cypriots. For Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The return of the enclosed city to its rightful owners, the opening of the city port, the reconstruction of the city will become major historical landmarks and intersections, in the modern course of our island.
