With a post on the Municipal News, the Municipality of Famagusta remembers Yuri Gagarin's visit to Famagusta in February 1962.
In its post, the Municipality of Famagusta wrote:
The man who saw the Earth from Space... stood in front of our city's City Hall.
Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, visited Famagusta and was declared an honorary citizen, in a historic ceremony led by then-mayor Andreas Pugiouros.
The city welcomed him with flowers, children's voices and immense pride. It was a moment when our little Famagusta was connected to the infinity of the universe.
Gagarin himself had said:
"I saw the Earth from space and it was so beautiful...
Let's protect this beauty, not destroy it."
