The Plenary Session of the Parliament, out of the order of the day, with a statement unanimously and unequivocally condemns the statements of the so-called Turkish "prime minister", Unal Ustel, regarding the opening of the entire occupied city of Famagusta and in particular of its closed area with a timetable for the implementation of the so-called "municipal elections" of December 25, 2022 and asks the UN and the EU to take practical measures to stop the Turkish methods.

In the statement, the Plenary of the Parliament expresses particular concern about the last statements of Mr. Ustel and states that interpreting the feeling of all the political forces represented in the House of Representatives for the provocation and painlessness that such statements contain for the entire Cypriot people, the which blatantly undermine any attempt to find a mutual, acceptable and sustainable solution,

It further recalls United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions 550/1984 and 789/1992 in relation to Famagusta, as well as the Security Council statement of 9 October 2019, based on which no action in relation to the city of Famagusta should not be done that is not in accordance with the said resolutions, that the responsibility for the status quo in Famagusta rests exclusively with the Turkish Government, but also that any illegal unilateral actions by the Turkish side are outside the UN framework for Cyprus,

It unanimously and unequivocally condemns these statements and any similar provocative action instigated by the Turkish side, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and torpedoes any attempt to create the appropriate climate for the resumption of negotiations to find a solution to the Cyprus conflict.

At the request of the President of EDEK Marinos Sizopoulos, a paragraph was added to appeal to the United Nations and the EU to proceed with taking practical measures that will prevent the implementation of this provocative action by the Turkish government and at the same time promote the implementation of resolution 550/ 1984 of the UN Security Council for the return of the legal residents of Famagusta to their city.

Based on the directive of the chairman of the Plenary session, Zacharias Koulias, the text added that the Parliament calls on the international community not only to condemn the statements and intentions in question, but also to take all appropriate actions to prevent and stop such initiatives.
