The Municipal Councilor of the occupied Municipality of Famagusta condemns the action of the Turkish Cypriot side to take political advantage of the bi-communal film festival and requests an explanation from the Bi-Community Relations Committee of the Municipality of Famagusta.
The Democratic Alliance Cooperation expresses its displeasure and opposition to the political exploitation of the co-organization of a bi-communal film festival by the occupying regime.
We believe that the content of the bicommunal event, which concerns a film festival, could be a positive initiative. However, the invitation, as promoted by the Turkish Cypriot side, includes both the logo of the legal Municipality of Famagusta and the illegal occupying municipality, which constitutes an indirect recognition of the occupying authority.
In addition, the invitation mentions the "Greek Municipality of Famagusta in the south", an unacceptable and reprehensible fact.
In addition, I submit my disagreement on the way the issue was handled by the Famagusta Municipality's Intercommunal Relations Committee, which acted arbitrarily and without the necessary approval from the Plenary Session of the Municipal Council of our occupied Municipality.
The decision on the date and plan of the event, as well as the organizing process itself and even the content of the films to be shown during the event, should be put to the Plenary for consultation and approval, as was my position at a meeting of the Plenary of the Municipal Council on October 17, 2024, so as to avoid unnecessary confrontations and misunderstandings.
Bypassing this process resulted in the exploitation of the event by the occupying regime, which uses this initiative to derive political benefits.
The Democratic Party - Cooperation strongly condemns these actions and immediately requests an explanation from the Famagusta Municipality's Intercommunity Relations Committee, as we believe that such practices are against the struggles and efforts of the people of Famagusta for justice and return.
