In the coming days, the Security Council may discuss the issue of the besieged city of Famagusta, said Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou, noting that by appealing to the UN Security Council, Nicosia is seeking a statement reaffirming the relevant resolutions. and 550.
In his statements to KYPE, Mr. Prodromou said that the issue of Famagusta is brought before the Security Council based on what is said or announced by the Turkish side. "All the pre-arrangements have been made, the ground is positive," the government spokesman said.
He also said that Nicosia is not seeking a new resolution, as the Security Council resolutions on Famagusta are very satisfactory.
"After this discussion, a statement is expected and not a new resolution," he said, noting that the aim is to reaffirm the relevant decisions.
Regarding the possibility of a tripartite meeting, the Government Spokesman said that Nicosia expects from the UN Secretary General for further, while expressing readiness to agree on the terms of reference, based on the understanding formed on August 9th.
He said that during President Anastasiadis' recent meeting with Antonio Guterres in New York, the two men had a creative discussion, with the President fully agreeing with the UN Secretary-General's approach. The President reiterated to the Secretary-General what he had said to his special envoy, Jane Hall Luth, noting that the Greek Cypriot side was satisfied with the triptych that had been agreed upon and considered that negotiations could begin, the spokesman said.
"First we agreed, there is an agreement, it remains for the Secretary General to call us to close it if there is ground," said Mr. Prodromou. He added that apart from that triptych, there is no question of including a reference to political equality.
Before the UN General Assembly, President Anastasiadis had spoken about the understanding between the leaders of the two communities on the content of the terms of reference, saying that they should include the Joint Declaration of 11 February 2014, the convergences that were achieved and which had lead to the convening of the Conference on Cyprus in Crans Montana, and the framework of the six points of the UN Secretary General, as presented on June 30, 2017 in Crans Montana.
Regarding the possibility of convening an informal five-party conference, Mr. Prodromou said that it is not something that Nicosia sees negatively, as "the guarantor powers will be inside" as long as there is the international aspect of the Cyprus problem.
Nicosia is working with the UN Secretary General, who will judge and decide, the spokesman concluded.
