The immediate termination of EU funding to Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in case they open and settle the enclosed city of Famagusta was suggested by the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis at the recent European Council, as he announced in an interview with Euronews. He even stressed that he believes that when the time comes to vote, a similar proposal will be approved by the other Member States.
The termination of funding will, as he explained, will concern funds related to Turkey's accession process and funding of the Turkish Cypriots, which will help the reunification of the island. As he pointed out, this suggestion should not worry anyone as long as there is respect for international law. He even expressed the certainty that neither Turkey nor the Turkish Cypriot side will reach the point of proceeding with such actions. At the same time, he conveyed the belief that the measures against Turkey on the part of the EU would be gradually escalated. In any case, the emphasis within the European Council was given to other issues and not to this proposal.
Crans Montana
"I never left Crans Montana", was the answer of the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis to a question of a Euronews journalist about whether he considers "how wrong was it when you left Crans Montana, which was a momentum for the settlement of the Cyprus issue?" . The President of the Republic pointed out that c. c. The UN interrupted talks when it saw that there was no expected progress, especially on the issue of guarantees and the presence of occupying troops, noting that the Turkish side did not give its written positions on all points of the Guterres framework. He even pointed out, answering a relevant question, that we would talk about an opportunity for a solution in Crans Montana only if Turkey showed handwriting samples, something it did not do, as President Anastasiadis claimed. He stressed that the solution sought by the Greek Cypriot side is the ICC and that only Turkey refers to other forms of solutions and no one else. Commenting on Turkey's aggressive strategy in the region and Ankara's use of military measures, the President stressed that "sometimes military weakness is the force that prevents conflicts".
