The issue of the completion of the works on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the General Hospital of Famagusta was discussed on Monday by the Minister of Health, Konstantinos Ioannou, with the Mayors and Commune Mayors of the free Province of Famagusta.

It is noted that with a decision of the Council of Ministers, the completion of the works on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Hospital has already been launched, a development of the Hospital that was a constant request of the staff and the residents of the Province.

According to the plans, a clinic for passers-by will operate on the 3rd floor COVID-19, while until the completion of the works at the Famagusta Hospital and in cases where it is not possible to serve patients at the Hospital, all cases that require medical care will be referred either to the Larnaca General Hospital or to private hospitals contracted with the General Hospital.

After the meeting, the Mayors and Commune Mayors of the Province of Famagusta expressed their satisfaction with the assurances of the competent Minister that the Government is investing in the specific hospital, while also expressing the hope that the General Hospital of Famagusta will function normally in the next three months.

In statements by all the Mayors and Commune Mayors of the Famagusta District, the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, said that during their meeting positive data were announced for the General Hospital of Famagusta, with the first fact that in a period of three months they will be created and operated normally the two additional floors of the specific Hospital.

According to the Mayor of Deryneia, the competent Ministry has given assurances that the Famagusta Hospital was staffed with additional medical and nursing staff, while noting that they have received other assurances today for the arrival of additional staff.

He also said that the Minister of Health referred to the difficulties that follow in relation to the new cases, which are very likely to occur in the coming months, especially during the winter.

He noted that Mr. Ioannou asked the Local Authorities to be careful and to inform the citizens about the precautions they should take, as well as that they should respect the protocols.

Referring further to the two floors that were launched, Mr. Karagiannis said that they will meet the needs that currently exist, noting that some units had to close, such as the pediatric.

"When these two floors are created, each section will have its own space to be housed," he said.

Asked if the Mayors and Commonwealths are concerned about the coexistence of the Referral Hospital with their other clinics, the Mayor of Deryneia said that "it is clearly an issue that is seen by the Hospital Management", adding that "people who are treated with COVID 19 are treated in the basement of the Hospital and do not affect other units ".

Pediatric Department

In addition, Mr. Karagiannis said that today they have received assurances that although the pediatric department will remain closed until the completion of the two floors, nevertheless four pediatricians will remain at the disposal of parents and children.

"The children will be examined at the General Hospital of Famagusta and where necessary they will be transferred to the General Hospital of Nicosia or to Makareio Hospital. "We hope that immediately, after 3 months, the Famagusta Hospital will operate normally," he said.

Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Health, as well as to the medical and paramedical staff of Famagusta Hospital.
