Yesterday, a group of citizens of Famagusta sent a proposal to the Minister of Foreign Affairs regarding the registration of the owners of the entire city of Famagusta. The proposal was also given to the Mayor of Famagusta.
Proposal of Citizens of Famagusta for the creation of an Action Group within the Municipality of Famagusta:
"The people of Famagusta are anxiously watching the ongoing plans of the Turkish occupiers to colonize the city of Famagusta, while the Republic of Cyprus is keeping silent about the whole issue. No one is dealing with the city, the talks seem to be still light years away, people have reached points of despair and worst of all, they are already being approached by various people to sell their property.
The citizens of Famagusta know that the Municipality of Famagusta has neither the infrastructure nor the financial means to move to claim the properties through the legal route. For some time now, on the occasion of the illegal entry of Turks into the enclosed city, groups of citizens have exchanged views with legal and political experts on the issue of rescuing the city, and given the difficult times ahead, they are proposing an emergency action plan. will help the Municipality, and will legally shield the landowners.
The plan concerns the creation of an Action Group within the Municipality of Famagusta that will carry out the registration and legal securing of the properties of Famagusta residents through the Real Estate Committee.
Applications to this committee must be individual. Many citizens have already filed applications with the Real Estate Commission, but there are still a large number of citizens who cannot afford to go to law firms to write these applications.
The purpose and reason for the existence of the Action Group is the recording of all properties and the writing of applications in the name of the owners.
We call on the Cypriot government to stand by the people of Famagusta who are terrified of losing their city every day. We ask the Cypriot Government to financially assist the Municipality of Famagusta in the difficult but necessary plan for the rescue of the city by embracing the whole proposal and paying all the salaries of the people who will form the Action Group.
THE ACTION GROUP
1. It will include 4 or more experienced lawyers to compile on behalf of the owners the applications with all the necessary accompanying documents, and to provide solutions to a multitude of questions and problems raised on company issues, etc.
2. It will include 2 employees of the Famagusta Land Registry to compile the list of properties and to assist lawyers and owners in matters of finding and updating property titles.
3. Necessary for the team is an expert in creating the appropriate software.
4. The Team should also be reinforced with additional secretarial staff to respond to the project.
The Action Group will be based alternately in all cities of free Cyprus and will have specific terms of reference and a six-month schedule for the implementation of the plan.
The Action Team, after locating all the landowners (of the wider and the coastal front) from the Famagusta Land Registry, will invite each owner to a scheduled meeting to present the titles of its ownership and whatever else the application needs.
The people of Famagusta strongly believe that this could be an important step in shielding their property and a sample of support for the Cypriot Government after 46 whole years. "
