A meeting was held with agricultural producers in the Paralimni area regarding the issues arising from the Paralimni Lake water extraction channel. This is a particularly important infrastructure project, which was constructed many years ago with the aim of draining the lake's waters and enriching the aquifer.
The possibility of closing the canal is of great concern, as it is expected to create serious problems, such as:
* Lack of water for the needs of producers,
* Increase in salinity in all water sources in the area,
* Creation of stagnant water, which poses risks to public health.
In his statements, the Mayor of Paralimni-Derynia stated that "It goes without saying that we are not opposed to maintaining the necessary amount of water for the protection and development of the lake's wetland. However, the complete cessation of operation of the canal will have ripple effects, which cannot be ignored."
