The Famagusta District Administration is proceeding with the construction of a new road network that will connect the communities of Avgoros and Achnas. This is a project to build a new road network that will be built south of the Achna Dam and will improve the capacious road which is within the boundaries of British Bases.

The details of the project

The new road network will be constructed south of the Achna Dam, will be approximately 1,5 km long and will be a new route that will replace the existing road, as shown in the map provided by the Famagusta.News.

At the same time, the improvement of the already existing road network of approximately 600 meters will be completed. The road network will consist of two lanes (one in each direction) while the study speed will be 50-80km / h. The layout of the road network is in line with modern geometric standards, while an effort was made, where possible, to follow the course of existing non-dirt roads in the area, in order to limit the environmental impact of the project under study.

The proposed project received the green light from the competent environmental authority last November. The coordination will be done by the Famagusta District Administration while the construction plans have been prepared by the Department of Public Works on behalf of the Famagusta District Administration. It is pointed out that the Environmental Authority considered it necessary to consult with the competent authorities, due to their specialized knowledge of the specific project or the potential impact of the project on the environment. Opinions were received from the Game and Fauna Service and the Famagusta District Administration and joint on-site visits were carried out. In the pre-submission stage of the study in question, the relevant services of the British Bases were consulted as the project falls within their limits.

The new road network crosses agricultural plots which should be expropriated for the needs of the project, while it is noted that the road network under study passes south of the Achna Dam, Natura 2000 area (CY3000007) and an important habitat of the wider area. The nearest point between the new road network and the Natura 2000 site is approximately 350 meters to the east of the work area. during the design of the road network under study, the protected area was taken into account in order to limit the effects on the environment from its construction and operation.
