The severe bad weather affecting Cyprus has been causing serious problems since the morning of Saturday, August 29, 2026, with strong storms occurring in several areas of the island.
In the area of Agios Nikolaos in Avgorou, lightning caused a fire in a warehouse adjacent to a house and an interruption in the electricity supply.
According to the Deputy Mayor of Avgorou, Panayis Michaelas, the lightning struck a warehouse in a house, which caught fire. Firefighters and police rushed to the scene, but there were no injuries.
Mr. Michaelas pointed out that very intense weather phenomena occurred in the region, resulting in small-scale flooding.
EAC crews rushed to the scene and worked to repair the damage, which caused a three-hour power outage. The damage was repaired shortly before 12:30 on Saturday afternoon.
An orange warning for severe storms was issued today, Saturday, with the Meteorology Department warning of intense phenomena expected to affect parts of Cyprus. The warning is in effect from 10:00 in the morning until 19:00 in the evening of Saturday, August 29.
According to the Department of Meteorology, the intensity of the rain may range between 55 and 70 millimeters per hour, while hail is also expected during the storms.
