Georgia Christofi, 42, who had been hospitalized at Larnaca General Hospital since January 15, where she had been admitted for a scheduled hysterectomy, breathed her last. The woman was found three days later, on January 18, unconscious in the hospital toilet, having suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, with her family filing a complaint, which is under investigation by the Health and Social Services Authority.
According to information from the Police, the 42-year-old woman died today, despite the brave fight she gave for her life, spreading unspeakable sadness to her relatives and friends. As reported, an autopsy is expected to be performed on the body in the coming days, in order to determine the exact causes of her death.
In a letter sent by the family to the management of Larnaca General Hospital, it is noted that the unfortunate woman was admitted to the hospital on January 15, with the intention of undergoing a scheduled hysterectomy the following day. As claimed, on January 17, the patient allegedly asked the medical and nursing staff not to remove the catheter, as, as she stated, she was unable to move due to her condition. This request, according to the family, was not accepted.
On the same day, the 42-year-old reportedly contacted relatives, stating that she was trying to call for help through the bell in order to go to the bathroom, but there was no response from the staff. As a result, she reportedly got up on her own, resulting in her falling to the floor.
A similar incident, according to her relatives, appears to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday, January 18, as evidenced by messages they received from her. A short time later, these messages suddenly stopped, which caused intense concern in the family.
As reported, on the morning of the same day, it was recorded in the medical file that the woman was found by staff unconscious on the toilet floor. After conducting the necessary tests, it was determined that she had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, which led to her intubation and transfer to the Intensive Care Unit of Larnaca General Hospital, where she was hospitalized in critical condition until her death.
Through the letter, the family raised serious questions about both the removal of the catheter and the alleged failure to respond to the patient's repeated calls for help, requesting a full and in-depth investigation into the circumstances under which the events unfolded.
In his statements, the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, stated that a relevant complaint has also been submitted to the Ministry of Health, which was forwarded on the same day to the Hellenic Health and Safety Authority for investigation.
"I await the results of the investigation of the case by the OKYpY," said Mr. Charalambides, adding that the complaint was forwarded as an urgent matter from the very beginning.
