A citizen spotted a caged shark on the beach of Agia Thekla, uploading its photos on social media.
In particular, according to what was also published by SigmaLive, the shark was trapped between rocks and the citizen did not hesitate to touch it, helping it to free itself.
The shark in question appears to belong to the species Isurus oxyrinchus, commonly known as shortfin mako.
Tuna is a cosmopolitan pelagic species. It is found in ocean waters, and sometimes in coastal waters. Its usual length is about 270 cm. It is at the top of the food chain and feeds on swordfish, tuna, other sharks and squid. Occasionally this species also feeds on marine mammals and sea turtles.
The tuna dog is an endangered species, according to the IUCN Red List. In the Mediterranean it is protected under international conventions and laws, so its fishing is prohibited.
This particular species of shark was also recorded the year before last in the port of Limassol.
