An M58 machine gun was the one used by the perpetrator in the Ayia Napa attempt last Sunday morning outside a cafeteria.
A total of 25 7,62 mm cartridge cases found at the scene were ballistically attached to the weapon. According to what was heard by the investigator of the case before the Court on the morning of Tuesday, February 18, the weapon was connected through scientific testimony with the 38-year-old suspect who has been in custody for eight days since yesterday.
A police search in the area early Sunday morning found the weapon at the end of the stairs leading to the basement of the Thalassa Museum, about 150 meters away from the place where the perpetrator opened fire. Police initially said, however, that a Kalashnikov was used in the attempt. Before the court the investigator said that the weapon used was M58.
A relevant post by Lazaros Mavros states that the M58 is a Czech automatic assault rifle. The M58 carries the same cartridges, ie 7.62 mm similar to those put by the Kalashnikov AK47. According to Lazaros Mavros, both weapons were in the arsenal of the Police for several years.
An unknown man, who passed through the area shortly before the beating, was also reported during the court proceedings.
