Reports of poor employment and housing conditions, as well as incidents of sexual harassment against young British women who – through a specific agency – come to work in Ayia Napa, are included in a Channel 4 documentary.
Speaking on the Morning Schedule, Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zanetou did not rule out the possibility of such isolated phenomena, which he stressed do not reflect the overall picture of the region. He noted that Ayia Napa is an international tourist destination, with hundreds of thousands of visitors.
He emphasized that there will be communication with the Minister of Justice and Public Order and the Chief of Police, in order to investigate which individual businesses are violating the law and to take measures.
He also said that for his part, the Municipality will identify the inappropriate premises where seasonal staff are hosted, so that the relevant complaints can be made and the issue resolved.
Under cover, a Channel 4 journalist traveled to Cyprus as part of an investigation into the case and used hidden cameras to record what was happening in the area.
In the documentary, he notes - among other things - that nightclub owners in Ayia Napa also offered the same job, in exchange for sex.
She reports that in many cases, young women from Britain are paid little, unaware that they are being employed illegally, and they receive threats.
The journalist notes that these specific events are also occurring in other parts of Europe.
Andreas Constantinou, Press Secretary of the Famagusta Police Directorate, told CNA that "the ex officio investigation by the Police concerns a publication and a video that was circulated on social media recently, specifically yesterday."
Mr. Konstantinou stated that "the specific publication and video came to the attention of the Police and it was deemed appropriate for the Police to conduct an ex officio investigation in order to determine whether any criminal offenses arise."
The case is being examined by the Famagusta Police Department.
Reports of “deplorable employment and housing conditions as well as incidents of sexual harassment against young British women who come to work in Ayia Napa” are included in a documentary on a channel in England.
It is recalled that "according to the documentary, the women allegedly come to Cyprus through a specific office with the aim of working in tourism businesses in Ayia Napa."
As alleged, "the conditions they faced had nothing to do with what they had initially been presented with, while there is talk of exploitation, inappropriate accommodation and unacceptable behavior towards them."
