Ayia Napa is going to have two reference points, unique in Cyprus, in the near future. The reason for the gilded statue of Peter Stronsky and the Underwater Sculpture Park, which will be built in various phases, on a secluded beach in the municipality.

According to Mayor Ioannis Karoussos, the International Academy of Culture and Arts of the Russian Federation contacted and received the green light to donate to the municipality a gilded statue depicting the angel, Peter Stronsky.

It is a prominent religious symbol of the Russian people, depicting an angel who protects and promotes peace and goodness among people and consequently peoples.

The statue of the angel will be made of metal, fiberglass and will be gilded. It will be about five meters high, while with the base on which the gilded statue will be placed, it will exceed nine meters. It will weigh around 600 kg. The cost of its construction will be entirely financed by Russian businessmen. The Municipality of Ayia Napa will bear only the costs of transporting and installing the statue from Moscow to Cyprus.

By its decision, the Municipal Council of Ayia Napa decided that the statue of the angel be placed in a prominent position in the port of Ayia Napa, as part of an event. The installation of the statue of the angel is placed in the coming months.

Mr. Karousos also mentioned that Peter Stronsky donated similar statues to cities that have close relations with Russia and especially with the International Academy of Culture and Arts of the country. An angel was recently donated to the Russian city of Niagara, which holds an image, and since 2014 such a sculpture adorns the coastal front of Cannes in southern France.

The angel of Cannes raises the Golden Palm in his hands. In 2012 another angel, holding a dove, was placed on a tall pillar on Lake Balaton in Hungary. Similar statues have been erected in Slovakia, but also in Ierissos, Greece.

In the case of Ayia Napa, the angel of peace and goodness will hold the image of the Virgin Mary, sending messages of kindness and solidarity between the peoples of Cyprus and Russia.

The Underwater Sculpture Park

Referring to the second major project, he said it will be the Underwater Sculpture Park. The underwater park will be built in the area of the artificial reef of Ayia Napa, where as it is known a few years ago the old ship of the National Guard, "Kyrenia" was sunk.

Already, from this year the reef will be enriched at a cost of € 300 thousand, while by 2020, the first phase of the underwater park is expected to be ready.

It will consist of large sculptures that will be immersed in such depth that they are distinct from someone who swims with a mask on the surface of the sea, but at the same time visitors can swim among the visitors with oxygen devices, who will gain a unique experience.

The project, continued Mr. Karousos, in its final form will occupy an area of a few hundred square meters and will be analogous to a similar one that exists in Mexico.

He also stressed that the Municipality of Ayia Napa promotes the project in strict consultation and cooperation with the relevant government departments, so that there are no problems or environmental complications around this project.

The mayor of Ayia Napa is optimistic

The mayor stressed that Ayia Napa is now moving in terms of its tourism development, based on international standards and regulations, so that in the coming years it will move from the tourism level 3.3 that is today, at least to the level 4.4.

When it achieves this, he added, Ayia Napa will be included in the list of the world's elite tourist destinations.

With Marina-mammoth, with Environmental Center and Sculpture Park in Cape Greco and with landmarks such as the Bridge of Lovers, the Square of International Stars, the Angel of Peace and Kindness and the Underwater Sculpture Park.

All this in combination with its known and existing values. That is, the beautiful beaches, their clear blue waters, the golden sand and the beauty of the wider natural landscape.
