An alarm was raised at noon in Ayia Napa, following a phone call from an unknown person to the local Police Station, which spoke of the placement of explosive devices in a specific building, as well as in other, unnamed, locations.
The prescribed Police procedures were immediately activated to deal with incidents involving explosive devices or suspicious objects.
Shortly afterwards, a similar phone call from a different unknown person was made to a television station in Nicosia, with the same reference to explosive devices at the same property.
During the searches at the indicated location, a hand grenade was located. The area was immediately evacuated for security reasons, while the scene was cordoned off for examinations.
The grenade was received by Police pyrotechnicians for further evaluation, while investigations are ongoing. The case is being handled by the Famagusta Crime Investigation Department.
