The Leaders and Organizers of the Greek Revolution of 1821 for the overthrow of the Ottoman Empire, in consultation with the Archbishop of Cyprus Kyprianos and the other Greek Cypriot Prelates decided for reasons of strategy and tactics and to avoid mass retaliation by the non-partisans. in the armed Revolutionary Struggle and for this reason, apart from the Economic, Moral and Voluntary participation of Cypriots in the Greek Revolution, no serious revolutionary war events took place in Cyprus.

For the above reasons, the only battle that took place on March 17, 1826 in Ayia Napa between Greek Revolutionary Fighters and Turkish Guards of Ayia Napa and the Turkish Military Department of the Famagusta Guard is a historic exception.

A historical reference to the above is the report of the Dutch Consul in Larnaca Marco-Antonio Sant, which he submitted to the Government of his country and which states that about two hundred Greek Revolutionaries had arrived in the sea area of Ayia Napa with twenty Greek Ships for to supply water and other supplies, after a fierce battle they defeated the Turkish Guard of Famagusta.

"The Turkish Guard, which was assigned to guard the place, did not hesitate to attack them, although the battle was small and intensified when two hundred Turkish soldiers arrived in a hurry from Famagusta. In a few hours the Turks bent down, abandoned the fight and fled in disorder. Their losses in the dead, wounded and captives are estimated at fifteen people and the invaders received many munitions.

The Greeks after this deadly conflict boarded their ships plus collecting the loot, while this unexpected raid put the Turks on alert. Their fury of retaliation against the population could have led to tragic events if the wisdom and correct treatment of the situation by the commander of the Egyptian army on the island had failed to maintain order and calm among the population. On the same days, a Greek pirate, with a Russian flag on his ship, approached the shores of Larnaca and demanded supplies from the docked French and Austrian ships ".

* The above are mentioned as a confirmed reference to a historical research by the distinguished Greek Historian - Researcher Vassilis Sfiroeras.
