In a particularly moving atmosphere, in the presence of dignitaries and a large crowd, the ceremony to complete the Second Phase of the Twinning between the Municipality of Ayia Napa and the Municipality of Alexandroupoli took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, in the packed hall of the Archaeological Museum of Alexandroupoli, confirming the close bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two cities.
The event was attended by representatives of the local, police, military and ecclesiastical authorities, bodies and organized groups of Alexandroupolis, the Consul of the Republic of Cyprus in Thessaloniki, as well as the Deputy Governor of Evros on behalf of the Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, who delivered greetings.
The ceremony was preceded by a tour by the Ayia Napa Municipality delegation to the grounds of the Alexandroupoli Archaeological Museum, where the guests had the opportunity to learn about important elements of the cultural and historical identity of the region.
The delegation of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, led by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, and the Deputy Mayors of the Municipal Districts of Sotiras, Liopetri and Achna, Mr. Antonis Koumis, Markos Koumis and Nikos Vasilas, has been in Alexandroupolis since Tuesday, May 12, participating in the events for the 106th anniversary of the liberation of the city and its integration into the national body.
In his greeting, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, described the twinning as a substantial act of unity and cooperation between two Municipalities that are linked by common values, history and culture.
"The relationship between Ayia Napa and Alexandroupoli," he said, "is now gaining even stronger foundations. Through this cooperation, new paths are being opened in the fields of culture, tourism, youth and local government for the benefit of our citizens."
For his part, the Mayor of Alexandroupolis, Mr. Yiannis Zamboukis, underlined the importance of twinning, noting that the two cities share common historical references and a common vision for the future.
"The presence of the Ayia Napa delegation at our city's events," he noted, "is a special honor. The completion of the Second Phase of Twinning marks the beginning of even closer cooperation and joint actions that will strengthen the ties between the two local communities."
The event concluded with an exchange of commemorative gifts and the assurance from both sides that the cooperation between the two Municipalities will continue and be strengthened in the coming years.
