The presentation of the final results and analyses of the viability study for the establishment of a Source Sorting System and Separate Collection of Recyclable and Organic Waste, as well as the implementation of the "Pay As You Throw" (POT) System with the use of a prepaid bag in the Municipality of Ayia Napa, was successfully held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the "Georgos Seferis" Cultural Center.
The presentation was made by Mr. Kyriakos Parpounas, a member of the expert group of the PSC – No WASTE 21 consortium, which undertook the preparation of the study.
The event was attended, among others, by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, the Deputy Mayors of the Municipal Districts of Avgorou, Liopetri and Achna, Messrs. Panagis Michaelas, Markos Koumis and Nikos Vasilas, representatives of local bodies and organizations, owners and managers of hotel units, as well as citizens of the wider area.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, stated that "the Municipality of Ayia Napa systematically invests in green policies and sustainable solutions that ensure a cleaner and greener environment for our residents and visitors."
"Today's presentation," he added, "constitutes an important milestone in our planning and transition to an environmental management model that respects European directives and the principles of the circular economy."
For his part, Mr. Kyriakos Parpounas stated that the PDO seeks to strengthen sorting at source, separate collection, reuse, recycling and the reduction of waste destined for landfill.
The project is implemented within the framework of the Political Cohesion Program "THALEIA 2021-2027" with the co-financing of the European Union.
