The Municipality of Ayia Napa, in collaboration with the Association "΄Aroma" of Ayia Napa - Friends of the Sculpture Park, commemorates the 199th Anniversary of the Unique Battle of the Greek Revolution in Cyprus, which took place in Ayia Napa on March 17, 1826. A festive anniversary event is being co-organized by the Municipality of Ayia Napa with the Association "΄Aroma" of Ayia Napa - Friends of the Park, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the land area of the Port, to commemorate the 199th anniversary of the Unique Battle of the Greek Revolution in Cyprus, which took place in Ayia Napa on March 17, 1826. The event will be attended by H.E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Dr. Athena Michaelidou. A delegation from the twinned Municipality of Pogoni and representatives of the Municipality of Sfakia will also be present.
The event will begin at 5.30pm with a parade in which organized groups, Dance Groups/Cultural Groups, Nationalist Associations, public and private schools of all levels from all over the Free Province of Famagusta and beyond, will participate, accompanied by the Cyprus Philharmonic Police. After the procession arrives at the event site, the flame will be lit by the runners of the Pericles Demetriou Association and the reserve frogmen.
This will be followed by the hoisting of flags and banners of the Greek Revolution and the arrival of swimmers from the Association of Reserve Frogmen, holding the flag of the Revolutionary Struggle, which they will then hand over to the Honorable Minister of Education Dr. Athena Michaelidou. This will be followed at 18:00 by the greetings of the President of the Association "Aroma" of Ayia Napa, Friends of the Sculpture Park, Mr. Christakis Pittas, the Mayors of Pogoni, Sfakia and the Municipality of Ayia Napa, Messrs. Konstantinos Kapsalis, Ioannis Zervos and Christos Zannetou and the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Dr. Athena Michaelidou.
At 18:25 the anniversary performance begins, which includes a narration by the poet of the time who will be played by the well-known actor and director Mr. Andreas Tsouris, who is curating and directing the performance, a dance drama and reenactment of the Battle between the Greek and Turkish Guards of Ayia Napa-Famagusta.
Participating are the Musical Group of Michalis Hatzimichael, the Folklore Group of Achna Forest, the Dance Group "Para ti Limni" of the Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia and the Dance Groups "I Paradosi" of Liopetri, "THOI" of Avgorou and ELDYK. Afterwards, traditional dance groups will dance traditional dances and the evening will close with the National Anthem.
